‘Virtual reality’ therapy a new way

Article by David Johns.

A NEW type of therapy using virtual reality to treat conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to stress and sleep disorders, has been set up in Applecross.

Vision Counselling owner Katie Larkin said the therapy worked via an audio-visual head-mounted display in which the patient sees images on a screen.

“It induces an extremely deep state of relaxation. It’s a very new and exciting thing we’re doing.”

The therapy can also be used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, pain management, weight disorders and addictions.

The technology uses techniques such as psychology, hypnosis, deep relaxation and meditation.

Cost is about the same as a therapist would charge for a 90-minute session. Log on to www.visioncounselling.com.au for information.
